Aerowaves
Aerowaves (since 1996, www.aerowaves.org) is a network and platform for discovering
contemporary dance in Europe. The Bratislava in Movement Association, represented by
Miroslava Kovářová, has been a network partner since 1999.
Aerowaves identifies the most promising new works of emerging dance choreographers and
promotes the top 20 through international presentations. It thus fulfills a unique role by
connecting choreographers with curators, artistic directors of dance theaters, festivals, and
dance enthusiasts throughout Europe.
In fulfilling this goal, it relies on a network of 46 partners and promoters from
34 countries across Europe. These partners provide the network
with insight into their local dance scenes and talent, and promote the opportunities Aerowaves
offers within their dance communities.
Every year, Aerowaves selects 20 of the most promising emerging choreographers in Europe
and promotes their works for one year. It creates opportunities for these choreographers to
present their works in theaters and festivals that are partners of the network, as well as
beyond. Network members meet twice a year, with the annual meeting in October being the
most important. During this meeting, video recordings of the submitted works are evaluated.
In 2023, 694 choreographers from all over Europe submitted their works.
The result of the evaluation is the TOP20 selection, which is presented live at the network’s
second meeting in the spring – the Spring Forward Festival (2024, Darmstadt, Germany). This
festival invites playwrights, producers, and festival directors from around the world. Both
meetings are held in different member countries each year.
The autumn meeting provides an opportunity to showcase the artistic program – the most
interesting dance works from participating countries – to network members. In 2024, for the
first time in the history of Aerowaves, this meeting will take place in Slovakia, during the
Bratislava in Movement Festival.
Every year, the Bratislava in Movement Association presents the works of 3-4 creators from
the TOP20, not only in Bratislava but also in various regions of Slovakia.
